New looks are not at a cost to practicality

For some time now, Volvo has been successfully steering aesthetic design away from the boxy shape that its estate cars were once famous for.

The latest V60 is the best Volvo has done yet. It's sleek, wedge-shaped and almost coupé-like. Detail, coaching lines, light clusters and wheels combined with flowing lines and subtle roof-line seem to favour form over function. However the load area retains a capacity of 430 litres with the rear seats in place, so there doesn't seem to be any cost to practicality.

Volvo: Sports Wagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car

Volvo designer Örjan Sterner says "Our sports wagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car. For the customer who wants a lot of load space, there is our V70 or XC70."

Engine choices are huge and Volvo says the effort put into the design of the chassis and suspension in the S60 saloon has been translated into the Sports Wagon.

Volvo is targeting this car mainly to European sales, with around 90 per cent of the predicted annual production of 50,000 being sold here.

No pricing details have yet been released.
