Tragedy in the rallying community.

Saturday 16th June 2012 saw the tragic death of 24-year old Gareth Roberts at the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily.

It was at a critical point in his career that the popular, well-respected and talented Welsh co-driver lost his life in a freak accident.

As one half of an exceptional crew, both he and Irish driver, Craig Breen set out to contest the S2000 Championship in their Peugeot 207. At the start of the weekend's event they had been leading by six points after their victory in Monte Carlo.

After seven stages, the crew held sixth place overall, having set competitive times.in their 3rd event of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge - one of which was the Circuit of Ireland Rally. Organisers cancelled the Targa Florio as a mark of respect.

I read moving tributes from friends and fans, many of whom referred to Gareth as an "adopted Irishman" because of his professional association and close friendship with Craig, who also described him as the "little Welsh wizard".

Craig will know that the entire rallying community supports him and that Gareth died doing what he loved. It is hoped that this will be of some comfort to friends, relatives and Craig during this bleak time.

An online book of condolences has been set up on Craig Breen's website: www.craigbreen.com
