Mazda is set to unveil its Takeri concept for the first time in Europe in Geneva month. The Japanese car maker says that the design study represents a "next-generation mid-sized saloon" and will include regenerative braking technology, which harnesses energy lost during braking. Also integrated in the Takeri will be the SKYACTIV-D diesel engine and transmission.

Judging by images as well as the description, Takeri seems set for C segment saloon territory, already causing speculation (mostly from me), that it could be the basis for the new Mazda6.

In a press release this morning, Mazda said that the design brief was to combine energy efficiency without compromising on performance and handling and that the regenerative braking system will be a key factor in realising this aim. It works by converting kinetic energy to electricity during deceleration (much like the KERS system in F1 cars) and stores it to run the vehicle’s electric components. This reduces the load on the engine, reportedly increasing fuel economy by up to 10 percent.

The car has also offers a hint at the company's new design strategy; offering a more coupe-like shape to a four-door saloon. Further information and specs should be available after its launch at Geneva next month.
