Formula Ford 1600 at Kirkistown
By Ian Lynas, 12th June 2012
Formula Ford 1600 tops the bill for the June car race meeting at Kirkistown circuit and just like F1, there have been a number of different race winners. Ivor McCullough, Jonny McMullan, Adrian Pollock and Noel Dunne have all enjoyed the top spot on the podium with McCullough topping the points table.
This time it is another double-header as at the last meeting where Dubliner Noel Dunne scored twice. Pollock‘s victories came in the Euro SuperSeries for Formula Ford 1600, so his points tally was purely gained in the Northern Ireland Championship rounds.
It would be a brave person who could pick a winner on Saturday 23rd June, but one thing is for sure, race fans are in for two thrilling races. The Saloon and GT grids have swollen as tin tops in particular continue to prove popular with the Kirkistown racegoers. Drivers such as Keith Wray, Donal O‘Neill and Ralph Jess have provided heaps of entertainment.
The Kirkistown Saloon grid features, BMW, Vauxhall, Mitsubishi, Honda, SEAT and much more.
Launched this year and providing a starting point for drivers on a limited budget is the new Fiesta Championship. The man behind the entertaining Fords is Roy Smyth and through his sterling efforts the grids are growing in number race by race.
So far this season the driver who is proving the one to beat is James Turkington, younger brother of former BTCC Champion Colin Turkington, no doubt the experienced BTCC and WTCC driver has been passing on a few tips to little brother and so far it is working.
Completing the programme, a non championship race for Sportscars and the gerarbox karts make a welcome return with racing across two classes, 125 and 250cc.
Qualifying from 9.30am: Racing from 1.30pm.
